Twitter opens its African headquarters in Ghana – Nigerians react

Nigerians have taken to social media to react to the news that social media app, Twitter, is opening its African headquarters in Ghana.

Earlier today, Twitter selected West African nation, Ghana for its African headquarters. According to the social media platform, Ghana was selected as the base because the West African nation is a champion for democracy and free speech.

According to the social media platform, Ghana was selected as the base because the West African nation is a champion for democracy and free speech. They wrote in a post;

“As a champion for democracy, Ghana is a supporter of free speech, online freedom, and the Open Internet, of which Twitter is also an advocate. Furthermore, Ghana’s recent appointment to host The Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area aligns with our overarching goal to establish a presence in the region that will support our efforts to improve and tailor our service across Africa. “

The information has generated mixed reaction in Nigeria, as many took to social media to share their views on the development.

Adamu Garba wrote;

“I pray Ghana would not allow their country to be used as a platform for the orchestration of nuisance on the African internet space.

“Nigeria is safer with the hypocrisy of Twitter. We shall have to improve on our methods for elimination of fake news on the informationspace.

“They just hate Nigeria because they know that the only country that can be the next African super power, fully democratic, highly mobile population and good working age population is Nigeria

“Twitter came to Ghana to target Nigerian market. They won’t admit they need us, but we know.”

@ananabannamdi tweeted, “Largely based on textbook definition Nigeria is the largest economy in Africa and probably the largest social media engaging ecosystem in Africa as well. Sadly, the nature of political hijacking, state capture, bad governance and more decadence has made us chop another “L” again!”
